# Tags & Smart Tags

Tags help categorize documents, widgets and results. DataUnfold supports different tag scopes: system/global, project-level (widget tags), and event-level (timeevent tags).

## Create and use tags

– Go to a project, open **Custom Tags** or **Manage Tags**.

– Add a tag name and description. Choose the tag scope if available.

– Use tags to filter search results or to configure widgets & actions.

## Smart Tags

– Smart Tags use AI to auto-detect named entities or key fields in documents and can be defined as part of templates or project settings.

– Use smart tags to automatically extract structured information across documents.

## Tag scope summary

– **System/Global tags** — available everywhere

– **Project/Widget tags** — used by widgets and project-scoped features

– **TimeEvent/Event tags** — tied to specific files or events

## Troubleshooting & tips

– If a tag is missing where you expect it, confirm scope and whether it’s a custom or smart tag.

– Avoid reusing tag names with different meanings to prevent confusion.
